Last year, Southampton City Council launched the Portswood Project to help improve public transport to and through Portswood. The consultation stage was completed and now testing is being carried out.
Five of our services will reap the benefits of this project - the Bluestar 2 and 20 and the U1, U6 and U9.
Part of this scheme involved the introduction of a bus gate that gives bus priority through Portswood Broadway at certain times of the day. This is currently in place between 7-10am and 4-7pm Monday to Friday.
Restricting through traffic in this area will improve the reliability of our services travelling to and through Portswood as currently the amounts of traffic and congestion do affect the running of our buses. Journey time will be reduced and reliability will be significantly improved whether you are heading to Portswood or through the area towards Southampton or in the Eastleigh/Fair Oak direction.
The project will also make the area more pedestrian friendly and will make it a better environment to board and alight our services, and a more attractive place to visit.
Since the trial started, we have already started to see some excellent results which favour bus users and the service that we provide. The table below is a great indicator of how the bus gate is already making our buses more punctual! Click here to view the full report.

Positive feedback around the scheme is important to its success. If you are a bus user on any of these routes or in the surrounding area, have your say today!

The Council really value your feedback and provide monthly updates on the scheme's progress. They also take into account responses from the survey which affect future decisions. Click here to find out more about the overall scheme and to stay up to date.
If lots of people get on board to support current projects, we believe that further developments in bus priority in the city will be just around the corner.
