Bluestar Promise Day
Come and join us by the Bargate in Southampton on Wednesday 1st May between 10am and 3pm to find out more about how you can make the Bluestar Promise.
Bluestar is marking Responsible Business Week by encouraging people in Southampton to leave their cars at home in favour of travelling by sustainable transport.
The city has been singled out by the World Health Organisation as being at its limit of unsafe air - and Bluestar is working with Southampton City Council to help reduce congestion.
“On Wednesday 1 May, we are bringing our Bluestar Promise initiative to the Bargate in Southampton,” said Bluestar head of communications, Nikki Honer. “It’s all about challenging people living and working in the city to replace their car journeys for bus trips just one day a week.
“It may not sound like much, but just one of our new double decker buses - carrying upwards of 70 people - gives off less harmful emissions than a brand new diesel car. And if thousands of people committed to this change it could have a significant impact of the air quality here in Southampton.
“We have greatly improved the frequency and reliability of bus services over recent years - and invested heavily in brand new buses with low emissions engines to join our fleet. It’s all about making travelling by public transport an attractive proposition in Southampton - and encouraging more people to move away from using their cars.”
A team from Bluestar will be on hand between 10am and 3pm on Wednesday at the Bargate to talk to local people and businesses about signing up to the Bluestar challenge.
“It is important that our existing buses - as well as our new fleet - are just as kind to the environment,” added Nikki. "To demonstrate our own commitment to improving air quality in the city, we are retro-fitting older vehicles we still have with low emissions Euro 6 engines. These are kinder to the environment than a brand new diesel car. And we’ll be showcasing a bus, that has undergone this transformation, during our event on Wednesday.
