Redwhitebluestar bus launched by Jan Poortvliet at St Mary’s

Bluestar received the thumbs up from Saints Head Coach Jan Poortvliet as the acclaimed dutch manager – already being tipped for great things at Southampton Football Club – spread the message to supporters to travel the green way to the game.

We have decorated one of our double deck buses into special “redwhitebluestar” colours, designed to highlight to fans the new partnership between Bluestar and Southampton FC. The easy access Volvo bus was showcased at the stadium where Jan and Brenden McGlinchey, Head of Business Operations at the Saints, joined our Operations Manager Alex Hornby in cementing the exclusive travel deals for Saints fans.

Diehard Saints fans, the Hart family, couldn’t resist an inspection of the vehicle. After all, Dad Nick and daughter Casey feature on the side of the bus and across Bluestar’s publicity for the special offer at bus stops and stations across the network.

Discounted travel is available for both Match Day and Season Ticket holders, with up to £2 off Bluestar’s range of Dayrider passes. Season Ticket holders will benefit from discounted monthly and three monthly passes for everyday travel.

“We have been bowled over with the enthusiasm of Bluestar to help our supporters,” said Brenden McGlinchey. “The Club is in the unfortunate position of having to manage match day costs but we are delighted that a major bus provider has helped us maintain a match day benefit to our fans”.

He added: “The commitment to assist our season ticket holders every day of the week is a ground breaking move and could easily see great savings for those who regularly use their bus services to commute. The original scheme suspended for this season related to match day travel only and the club is delighted to be able to offer an environmentally friendly means of travel to season ticket holders 365 day a year whatever their reason for travelling.

Sadly the suspension of the previous scheme led to some unwarranted criticism of the Club’s green credentials. I hope that an innovative scheme like this sets the record straight. ”

Alex Hornby is also excited by what the new scheme can offer Saints supporters: “We really treasure working together with local businesses and organisations to promote the virtues of bus travel, particularly at a time when we are all keen to address the issues of congestion, climate change and escalating fuel prices. It is therefore extremely pleasing to be associated with such a powerful and local entity as Southampton FC, and hope that Saints fans can make the most from our services as we continue to build our passenger growth success in the city and beyond.”
