accessible to all

We want to provide access to our services to everyone, whether it’s for work, rest or play. Therefore we take very seriously the need to make it easier for those of you with mobility, sight, or hearing difficulties to get around on our buses.

Hard of hearing lady
We welcome contact by email or fax and we expect our drivers to be prepared to exchange notes with those who would find it assists communication. You should be happy and confident in offering written notes should this make you feel more comfortable.

our mobility impaired customer

70% of our vehicles are easy access buses, which are able to
accommodate wheelchairs. These buses have ramps and an
on-board wheelchair parking area.

please contact us to find out whether:

  • your bus service is regularly operated by easy access buses
  • your wheelchair does not exceed National Reference dimensions, which are 1200mm long and 700mm wide

we expect our staff to:

  • offer reasonable assistance when requested, and when they judge it is safe to do so
  • request other passengers to vacate the wheelchair parking area if this prevents a wheelchair from boarding
In the absence of national guidance, we can only carry mobility scooters below a certain size on our easy-access buses. We have held trials in conjunction with the Southampton Learning Disability Partnership Board that show that the maximum size must not exceed 100cm in length and 60cm in width. It is therefore essential that you contact us with details of the make, model and dimensions of your scooter to obtain authorisation before attempting to travel. Call 023 8061 8233 or fax us on 023 8061 4234 to check.
Our strong working relationship with our friends at the Southampton Learning Disability Partnership Board has led to us being free consultants in creating a transport guide for their members, and we also spent considerable time with them to understand their members' needs and ease of use for those in wheelchairs.
The guide is available to download here.

We work closely with the authorities who are responsible for highways, bus shelters and parking enforcement. If you encounter problems with any of these issues which make your journey particularly difficult, please let us know and we will take them up on your behalf. Moreover, if we fail to meet your expectations, or if you think one of our staff has done a good job, please let us know. Once you have boarded one of our buses we guarantee that you will finish your journey - even to the point of providing alternative transport free of charge. This guarantee applies wherever an accessible service is advertised.
